JOB SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, performs tasks as assigned by the Bus Driver Team Lead or Terminal Manager. Tasks include serving as a substitute driver for regular and special needs routes, performing clerical tasks, monitoring and evaluating drivers’ pre and post trip inspections, performing yard or facility cleaning, fueling, and other tasks as assigned. Employees in this job work a 40-hour workweek. Hours may be adjusted or flexed on a daily/weekly basis to achieve the 40-hour workweek. Employees in this job receive a six percent (6%) increase in their base salary for the duration of the assignment. Based on staffing needs, employees in this job may be assigned to work temporarily at another motor pool. Employees in this job are eligible to select weekend or non-school day field trips only.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Monitors morning and afternoon bus runs to ensure that each assigned bus is occupied. Notifies the Team Lead or Terminal Manager if a driver fails to report to work.
  2. Serves as a substitute driver on bus routes for regular, special needs, field trips, and extracurricular trips when the assigned driver is absent or unavailable. Responds to drivers with emergencies or breakdowns, and completes those routes as necessary.
  3. Performs other tasks assigned by the Bus Driver Team Lead or Terminal Manager including performing clerical tasks, monitoring and evaluating drivers’ pre and post trip inspections, performing yard or facility cleaning, fueling, or other tasks as assigned.
  4. Reacts appropriately to adverse circumstances. Successfully interacts with a wide range of individuals.
  5. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED

WORK EXPERIENCE: 6 months to 1 year driving experience required; three or more years of successful transportation driving experience preferred.

TYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION: Vehicles (e.g., automobile, truck, tractor, forklift) Class B CDL Certification Operation of 2-way radios, cell phones, e-mail, all types of school buses (regular and special education) and special needs equipment Good working knowledge of Houston streets and the ability to interpret a Key Map and/or use computer or internet mapping software such as MapQuest. Must have a strong customer service-orientation. Must be punctual and dependable. Applicant must not have been on an Employee Performance Improvement Plan within the last calendar year. Applicant may have no more than one preventable accident within the last calendar year. Applicant may not have more than five points on the MVR at the time of application.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES: No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Work and tasks are often straightforward, routine, structured and guided by established policies and procedures. Little, if any, independent judgment is required, outside of making basic choices in the selection and application of established methods. The job receives frequent, ongoing supervision.

BUDGET AUTHORITY: No budget development activity is required.

PROBLEM SOLVING: Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job's own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures or services.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS: Follows rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS: Information sharing - gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instructions and reporting results. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor and coworkers in own and other departments.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS: Follows through with customer inquiries, requests and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Ability to carry and/or lift at least 50 pounds.
