Job Family - Academics

JOB SUMMARY:

Manages the development, implementation, support, and maintenance of the curriculum component of STEM. Provides mathematics, science, engineering and technology leadership for the strong implementation of the district curriculum and assessment program within the project scope. Partners with other departments to lead STEM strategic planning for HISD. Manages problem-based learning projects for project schools.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Manages the design and development of standards based curriculum for districtwide STEM implementation in alignment with federal, state, and local policies, mandates and current researched-based practices.
2. Monitors local and state mandates and makes recommendations in regard to the impact to content, instruction, materials, and evaluation criteria.
3. Analyzes and uses districtwide data to direct ongoing needs-based identification and evaluation of instructional resources, programs, equipment, and supplies to ensure content alignment and collaboratively implements instructional programs for all students.
4. Manages the preparation and administration of departmental programs. Oversees the preparation of required reports, documentation, and evaluations. Develops recommendations around guidelines for management consideration. Leads implementation of policy, procedures, and guidelines. Monitors local and state mandates and makes recommendations in regard to the impact to content, instruction, materials, and evaluation criteria.
5. Collaborates with principals and other administrative staff on learning needs for proposed programs. Reviews and analyzes needs assessments, research surveys, and program evaluations for program and staff development.
6. Engages community partners to further develop STEM programming in the district.
7. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's Degree

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work Leadership. Regularly provides project management or team leadership to a group of two or more employees, but does not have formal supervisory responsibility. Leading and directing typically involves monitoring work and providing guidance on escalated issues. Most of work time is spent performing many of same duties they are leading.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT:

Work is substantially complex, varied and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities.

PROBLEM SOLVING:

Decisions are made with greater freedom and discretion, including recommendations that are subject to approval on matters that may affect multiple departments across HISD. Job is frequently expected to recommend new solutions to problems, to improve existing methods/procedures/services and generate new ideas. May also review decisions made by other individuals on more routine matters.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS:

Decisions have moderate impact to the facility/department or division, causing increased satisfaction or dissatisfaction; producing efficiencies or delays; promoting or inhibiting personal intellectual or professional development; and/or contributing to financial gain or expense. Errors may be serious, usually not subject to direct verification or check, causing losses such as improper cost calculations, overpayment or improper utilization of labor, materials or equipment. Effect usually confined to the organization itself and is short term.

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS:

Collaborate and solve problems - works with others to resolve problems, clarify or interpret complex information/policies, and provide initial screening/negotiations without approval authority. Interactions are typically with customers, senior level professional staff, and managers.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS:

Takes routine or required customer actions to meet customer needs. Responds promptly and accurately to customer complaints, inquiries and requests for information and coordinates appropriate follow-up. May handle escalated issues passed on from coworkers or subordinates.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements. Ability to carry and/or lift less than 15 pounds.
