IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Manager, Health and Medical Services

POSITION SUMMARY: Assists the Manager, Health and Medical Services in providing health programs, health education, and health services to students with disabilities to achieve and maintain optimal health for all students by reducing health related absenteeism.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES: Participate as a member of the special education health team to assist, formulate, and implement a plan for care to students with disabilities. Provide direct health care, emergency first aid and nursing care according to HISD policies and procedures. Consult with regular and special education teachers, nurses and staff. Observe students with disabilities on a regular basis to detect health needs and provide itinerant services as needed. Maintain preventive health guidelines according to HISD communicable disease control (screenings, appraisals, and immunization program. Make home, hospital and clinic visits as necessary for information and follow-up. Serve as a health and medical resource provider to parents, students, faculty, and staff. Provide and participate in in-service training. Perform other duties as assigned.


Education: Registered Nurse (R.N.) with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) currently licensed as a R.N. in the State of Texas

Experience: 3-5 years as a school nurse, Clinical experience preferred

Other Requirements: Ability to communicate effectively and in both written and oral forms with all levels of management both internal and external to the District. Ability to acquire information regarding different subjects analyzes, select, and present information in an acceptable form. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management both internal and external to the District. Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into focus; judge distance (close and distant); read with arms extended to use hands to manipulate the keyboard. Ability to travel throughout the District. Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, climb, drive and/or be mobile.
