JOB SUMMARY: Assists the Manager of EMERGE HISD in implementing a program to increase the number of HISD students who successfully attend and graduate from top-tier colleges and universities. Delivers EMERGE programming to HISD students and works directly with parents, and school administrators to ensure that the goals of the program are met. Coordinates various EMERGE events and summer programs that supplement school-year programming.

  1. Creates, organizes, orchestrates, and monitors plans to promote college readiness and the successful attendance of HISD graduates at top tier colleges and universities
  2. Works with various departments and campuses to keep project plans on track
  3. Implements programming and curriculum at school sites to ensure that top-tier acceptance and graduation goals are met. Interacts with students and travels to various schools to promote and/or assist with problems related to the EMERGE.
  4. Coordinates and delivers summer programming, including college visits and leadership training workshops.
  5. Provides individualized assistance to students in the program throughout the college application process.
  6. Promotes the EMERGE program at school sites and leads student recruitment for designated areas.
  7. Collaborates with team to design, evaluate, and enhance programming and curriculum.
  8. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE: 3 to 5 years of professional experience in an academic setting. Experience in student counseling, teaching or college admissions is strongly preferred.

TYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION: Microsoft Office, office equipment (e.g., computer, copier), Strong familiarity with admissions processes and experience at selective colleges, Bilingual (Spanish or Vietnamese) preferred, Exceptional interpersonal skills, able to relate one-on-one and in groups with confidence and poise, Ability to provide critical and constructive feedback to effect immediate change, Highly analytical, able to interpret data and weigh multiple options, Strong communicator, ability to write clearly and analytically, A problem solver, able to prioritize multiple scenarios, Ability to model research-based teaching strategies, Self-starter, flexible, able to adapt and adjust quickly to changing situations and needs.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES: Level 2 - Work Leadership. Regularly provides project management or team leadership to a group of two or more employees, but does not have formal supervisory responsibility. Leading and directing is restricted to monitoring work and providing guidance on escalated issues. Most of work time is spent performing many of the same duties they are leading.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Work is non-standardized and widely varied, involving many complex and significant variables including significant time spent planning, evaluating complex solutions and issues, and negotiating outcomes. Strong analytic ability and inductive thinking are frequently required to devise new approaches to situations where previously accepted solutions have proven inadequate. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the division. Supervision received typically consists of providing periodic coaching, advice and feedback. Specifies requirements for a plan and/or budget.

BUDGET AUTHORITY: Analyzes and interprets data and figures.

PROBLEM SOLVING: Decisions are made with greater freedom and discretion, including recommendations that are subject to approval on matters that may affect multiple departments across HISD. Job is frequently expected to recommend new solutions to problems, to improve existing methods/procedures/services and generate new ideas. May also review decisions made by other individuals on more routine matters.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS: Decisions have moderate impact to the facility/department or division, causing increased satisfaction or dissatisfaction; producing efficiencies or delays; promoting or inhibiting personal intellectual or professional development; and/or contributing to financial gain or expense. Errors may be serious, usually not subject to direct verification or check, causing losses such as improper cost calculations, overpayment or improper utilization of labor, materials or equipment. Effect usually confined to the organization itself and is short term.

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS: Collaborate and solve problems - works with others to resolve problems, clarify or interpret complex information/policies, and provide initial screening/negotiations without approval authority. Interactions are typically with customers, senior level professional staff, and managers.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS: Regularly assesses and diffuses complex, and escalated customer issues. Takes personal responsibility and accountability for solving systemic customer service problems. Regularly explores alternative and creative solutions to meeting the needs of the customer within HISD's policies and Houston Independent School District Job Description guidelines.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements. Ability to carry and/or lift objects weighing less than 15 pounds from one location to another.
