Job Family – Transportation

JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, recovers warranty funds. Inspects repairs by outside vendors for quality and timeliness of repairs. Monitors the PMI program quality assurance inspections and conducts random checks to help reduce mechanical breakdowns. Assists in training shop personnel and scheduling OEM training for the mechanics.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Meets with vendors daily to recover warranty reimbursements, requests quotes for goods and services to ensure the best value for the district.
  2. Negotiates repair cost and ensures accuracy of invoices. Verifies final repairs to ensure quality work is performed. Inspects outside vendors facilities for safety and EPA compliance. Maintains a web based training program for shop personnel.
  3. Compiles reports for mechanical breakdowns and repairs to identify trends in component failure for future warranty claims and parts failure forecasting. Works with the manager of Fleet Operations to resolve fleet mechanical problems. Compiles a warranty savings report for senior management.
  4. Develops daily work schedules for the transportation mechanics. Guides the employee in organizing a PMI training program for all maintenance shops. Writes technical bulletins and reviews with the manager of Fleet Operations for submittal to the shop personnel.
  5. Researches vehicles for open recalls and facilitates repairs with vendors and shop personnel. Inspects new vehicles to ensure quality of the product and specification requirements. Assists in writing RFPs.
  6. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Vocational / Technical / Business School

WORK EXPERIENCE: 1 to 3 years

TYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION: SAP, Microsoft Office Office equipment (e.g., computer, copier), Hand tools (e.g., hammer, shovel, and screwdriver), Power tools (e.g., radial saw, reciprocating saw, drill, pheunomatic hammer), Vehicles (e.g., automobile, truck, tractor, forklift) Class B CDL with passenger and school bus endorsement, ASE certifications

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES: No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Work involves the application of moderately complex procedures and tasks that are quite varied. Independent judgment is often required to select and apply the most appropriate of available resources. Ongoing supervision is provided on an "as needed" basis.

BUDGET AUTHORITY: Compiles and organizes data and figures.

PROBLEM SOLVING: Decisions are made on both routine and non-routine matters with some latitude, but are still subject to approval. Job is occasionally expected to recommend new solutions to problems and improve existing methods or generate new ideas.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS: Follows rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS: Information sharing - gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instructions and reporting results. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor and coworkers in own and other departments.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS: Takes routine or required customer actions to meet customer needs. Responds promptly and accurately to customer complaints, inquiries and requests for information and coordinates appropriate follow-up. May handle escalated issues passed on from coworkers or subordinates.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Ability to carry and/or lift 45 pounds or more.
